If the eyes are windows to the soul, the gauges in your electric vehicle are serving the same purpose. Similar to a modern car, electric vehicles like forklifts, golf carts, and electric scooters are equipped with various gauges in the instrument panel. Depending on the application, the gauges are utilized to give the driver a visual readout of various components including the battery level, battery discharge indicator, temperature, oil pressure/hydraulic pressure (when applicable), fuel level, or the hour meter of a particular vehicle.

There are many types of gauges. The most common and basic type of gauge is an analog instrument meter with an analog needle display. Modern vehicles and equipment are usually equipped with a digital instrument meter with an analog display, while a digital instrument meter with a digital display is used to only show numbers and figures.

Additionally, gauges are also used to display warning indicators like the battery level or engine oil pressure. If your vehicle has an illuminated warning light, it means the vehicle is unsafe to operate and should be checked, inspected, and/or repaired immediately. Without the gauges, the driver or operator will be unaware of the general condition of a particular vehicle or machine.

However, not all gauges are the same. Some are easier to decipher with a passing glance, while some are more complicated and will require a certain amount of familiarization. It’s important to always read the vehicle manual so you can become familiar with the many gauges and/or warning lights on the dashboard. Understanding the gauge readings not only prevents mechanical breakdown, but it will give you an idea of what to check in the event of a malfunction.
